Danville is a historic community located in south central Virginia on the Virginia /
North Carolina line. The Dan River flows through the heart of Danville on its path
from the Blue Ridge mountains to the Kerr Reservoir just 55 miles east of our city.
Danville lies 180 miles from the Atlantic coast and just 50 miles east of the beautiful
Blue Ridge Mountains at an altitude of 565 feet above sea level. The city's piedmont
location has been blessed with mild winter climate and moderate summer
temperature/humidity. The 1996 average annual temperature was 57 degrees and the
annual rainfall was 60 inches. Conveniently located between the Raleigh/Durham
Research Triangle area and Greensboro/ Winston-Salem Tri-City area of North Carolina
and the Roanoke & Lynchburg area of Virginia, all about a one-hour drive away.

The Main Street Bridge and Dan River Mills just north of the downtown area are at the
heart of the city. Dan River Mills was established in 1882 , is Danville's largest
employer and is the world's largest single-unit textile mill.
 
The downtown central business district is a typical main street USA.
With ample restaurants and shopping from clothing to hardware, plus financial,
professional, and government services. You will also find the train station and
farmers market downtown plus the science museum , auctioneer's park, public library,
Crossing of the Dan nature trail, Danville Chamber of Commerce, and a European flavor
coffee shop to meet with your friends.
Danville is Southern Virginia's largest industrial city, and is recognized as one of
the state's leading manufacturing centers. The Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. is one
of Danville's largest employers. Established in 1966, the Danville Goodyear plant is
the world's largest and most modern for manufacturing truck and aircraft tires. In
addition to Goodyear and Dan River Mills, Danville has several nationally recognized
manufacturers including Corning, Inc., DIMON , Health-tex, Intertape Polymer Corp.,
Masonite Corp., Menasha Corp., Nestle Refrigerated Food Co., Owens-Brockway, Inc., Star
Paper Tubes, Vulcan Materials, and many smaller companies manufacturing a varied product
line ranging from mobile/modular homes to lumber and electronics.

The City of Danville and surrounding area offers over 200 places of worship of various
denominations.
Danville is
serviced by a modern , not for profit medical center, with 430+ beds. The Danville
Regional Medical Center is located near the center of the city between South and West Main
Street. Community health is maintained by more than 140 physicians and 40 dentist.
There are also several modern medical office facilities, including Piedmont
Regional Medical Center, Piedmont Prime Care, and Immediate Care.
The City of
Danville and Pittsylvania County have school systems that provide the facilities and
environment to prepare our children for the 21st century. The area also has 9
private and parochial schools that serve grades K -12.
In addition to
the modern facilities of Danville Community College at left, the area is also home of
Averett University; a four year , private, fully accredited, independent liberal arts
college chartered in 1859. Averett offers bachelor's degrees in 35 majors and has
recently opened a 75 acre convocation and athletic center. Danville also has an
independent junior college of business in the National Business College.

The Danville area offers a wealth of
restaurants to satisfy everyone's taste. In addition to the nationally recognized
steak and seafood houses, Danville also offers the good Southern Style atmosphere and
cooking in several local diners and restaurants. Just ask a local resident for their
reference.
Danville has
three national banks with ten branches and five state banks with fourteen branches.
Most banks offer extended hours at their branch offices for your convenience. There

The City of
Danville offers over 295 acres of parks for the citizen's enjoyment. In addition to
the Dan Daniel Memorial Park that is home to the Danville Braves, a farm club of the
Atlanta Braves; the parks offer picnic grounds, hiking and bike trails, soccer, football,
baseball, and volleyball fields, an amphitheater, shelters with picnic ovens, horseshoe
pits, and a senior citizens center at the 107 acre Ballou Park off of West Main St.
Danville offers
five local golf clubs and has an additional five courses within a 40 minute drive.
There are also two public driving ranges and two golf shops in the Danville area.
The two public clubs are Ringgold Golf Club off U.S. 58 East
and Caswell Pines Golf Club , located on County Home Road,
off US 86 in Yanceyville, NC.
Danville is
surrounded by area lakes that are great for fishing, swimming, water skiing, and boating.
Buggs Island Lake , 50 miles east at Clarksville, Va.; Smith Mt. Lake, 30 miles
northwest; Hyco Lake, 25 miles south near Roxsboro, NC; and Philpott Lake, 45 miles west
near Bassett, Va. offer all the above plus camping facilities. There are other
smaller lakes including Farmer Lake, Burton Lake, and Mayo Lake nearby, all are excellent
fishing. And don't forget the Dan River at the heart of the city.
